Liberty Children’s Art Project (LCAP) in partnership with Aspen Ridge Elementary School in the NICE school district completed one day of our first ‘All Day Art Days’ art enrichment program.
LCAP had three artists and an assistant conducting four sessions throughout the entire school day which included 275 children from the elementary grades. Although LCAP teachers emphasized art production these sessions also included art aesthetics (art of different cultures) art criticism (looking closely at works of art) and art history (learning about important artists)
Lessons taught in these “All Day Art Day” sessions included:
Creating Environments with Paper Sculpture
Deconstruction/Reconstruction: Free Form ‘Junk’ Sculpture
Kuna paper Molas
Rangoli Celebration Mandalas from India
Kinetic Art that Moves- Inspired by Alexander Calder
The Aspen Ridge School is located outside of Ishpeming, Michigan in an isolated part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This one school in the Upper Peninsula’s largest rural district offers classes for grades K-8. This program was made possible by a grant from CUPPAD, a regional re-granting agency for the Michigan Council for Art and Cultural Affairs.
