Liberty Children’s Art Project

P.O. 663

Marquette, Michigan  49855

We are asking you today to contribute to the creative future of children, particularly rural children of the greater Marquette/Alger County areas who have few opportunities to explore and experience art.  Let me tell you why Liberty Children’s Art Project both needs and deserves your support.

Liberty Children ‘s Art Project  (LCAP) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization created in 1995 whose mission is to provide an environment of discovery, experimentation and creative learning through the visual arts for all children in the greater Marquette/Alger County areas. The art enrichment classes that LCAP provides teach artistic expression and creative problem solving skills that can be applied to all disciplines. We hope to begin a lifelong experience of art enrichment and creative thinking for our students.

At this time LCAP is collaborating  with eleven schools in Marquette and Alger County. We provide children with high quality, exciting after-school, in-school and/or summer art camp programs.  Included are schools in Marquette, Gwinn/Sawyer, Ishpeming, Negaunee, Republic/Michigamme, Big Bay, Chatham/Eben and Deerton/Autrain. In all these schools the art program budget has been severely reduced or entirely eliminated.

For all students and especially for those students who are visual learners, art can be a great confidence booster- a way of being successful and a new way of thinking about yourself.  Parents and teachers tell us what a difference art classes make in the lives of children.  One young student at Sawyer Elementary was diagnosed with dyslexia, and according to her mother, was struggling in the classroom.  However, in our after school art classes she flourished. It became obvious to the teacher, other students  and her parents that this young girl was extremely gifted and interested in art. Instead of thinking of herself as a failure she understood how extraordinary she was and how successful she could be in the future.

Sadly fewer and fewer children have the opportunity to discover  their creative potential through art. Surveys of area youth compiled by the Great Lakes Center for Youth Development pinpoints key resources that enable and nurture young people to develop in healthy, positive ways.  According to the latest survey, in the area of creative activities the youth of our area are lagging far behind. Only 17% of children are involved in creative activities for 3 or more hours per week.  In fact it was the lowest percentage of all the 40 developmental assets.

Your tax deductible donation of any amount will help us continue our mission of providing this important opportunity to the youth of our area.  For more information visit us at our website: http://lchildrensartp.org

Thank you for your considered donation,
