Autrain-Onota School

Liberty Children’s Art Project (LCAP) in partnership with Autrain-Onota School in Deerton, Michigan held the seventh series (two days) of “All Day Art Days” art enrichment program in the fall/winter of 2022/23.
LCAP hired three artists and an assistant conducting four sessions throughout the entire school day. Although teachers emphasized art production these sessions also included art aesthetics (art of different cultures) art criticism (looking closely at works of art) and art history (learning about important artists.) All children in the school participated using a wide variety of contemporary media and methods. This year the school was studying the country if Italy and the Renaissance which we used to inspire some of our lessons.

Examples of lessons taught in  the school year 19/20 include:

Clay: Big Mouth Monsters

Mexico Folk Art: Embossed Copper

Latino Arpilleras: Layered Landscapes

I am: Mixed Media Identity Collage

Mexican Festival : 3-D  Celebration Stars

Ugly Doll: Design and Sewing

The Deerton School district is located 30 miles east of Marquette in Deerton, Michigan, a very rural, isolated part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The one school in the district offers classes for combined grades K-8 and has approximately 45 students. These art enrichment classes are vital to the underserved youth of Deerton allowing them exposure to a fine arts experience taught by certified art teachers and working artists.

LCAP’s ‘All Day Art Days’ for this school were made possible by a generous grant from a generous grant from the  MCACA/NEA and the Marquette area Rotary Clubs
