LCAP teacher Kelly Franzmann, giving step by step instruction to students
Liberty Children’s Art Project (LCAP) in partnership with Ishpeming Middle School in Ishpeming, Michigan held four “All Day Art Day” art enrichment sessions at their school in the fall of 2016 and spring of 2017. This was the fourth year for this program at this school.
LCAP hired three artists and an assistant conducting twelve sessions for twelve different classrooms throughout the entire school day. Although teachers emphasized art production these sessions also included art aesthetics (art of different cultures) art criticism (looking closely at works of art) and art history (learning about important artists.) Teachers used a variety of inspiring methods and media to bring art to students in a school where art is not part of the curriculum.
Included in the day were the following lessons:
The Skull: Addition and Subtraction Methods in Chalk Pastel
One Point Perspective: Your name in design
Cold Wax Batik Methods
Zentangle through Nature: Rainbow Scratchboard Technique
Lame Superheroes: Comic Book Cover Design
Warm and Cool Colored Landscapes
International Tattoo Designs and Meanings
Aztec Sun Stone
Insects Close Up: Looking through a Viewfinder in Positive and Negative Space
LCAP served approximately 740 students in this series of ‘All Day Art Days’ in a school which has no art program.
These art days were made possible by a donation from the Ishpeming Middle School, the Hirvonen Foundation and a grant from the MCACA/NEA
